Digital Needle

About

Slightly modified from http://www.s3.kth.se/signal/edu/projekt/proj_def_03/project6.shtml

Background

Old gramophones are becoming more and more uncommon. Often there exist some old records that you would like to listen to, but you cannot afford wearing the record out. There exist techniques where a laser beam follows the trace on the record. Such equipment is fairly expensive and affordable by only the most devoted music lovers.

Objective

The objective is to extract the sound information from a scanned image of an SP record. The final system shall be fully automate, meaning that from one or several readings of a record, image processing, trace detection and following, and finally sound enhancement should be performed without any human interaction.

Specification

Image extraction will be made with a scanner of type CanoScan5000F from Canon, available to the group in the project lab. With the large image data into consideration, the image processing may be performed both on the host computer and the DSP board. However, the final implementation may not use Matlab in any matter. Sound enhancement and sound output shall be performed by the DSP card. The sound quality shall be equal or better than what is achieved in the second reference below.
